Working at a height has become a regular requirement across construction, manufacturing, warehousing, infrastructure, facility management and all other allied industries. But reaching an elevated work area is only one part of the challenge. Businesses also need to consider how workers access the location, how long it takes to establish the work area, how easily equipment can be moved, how safe is it for them and how efficiently the job can be completed. This is where modern Aerial Work Platforms can play an important role.

When correctly selected and operated, AWPs can provide businesses with a structured, mobile platforms for elevated work while supporting productivity and operational efficiency.

AWPs are a perfect option which provides a dedicated elevated work platform enabling the work to be completed at a height more efficiently, in a timely and safe manner. Instead of repeatedly setting up and dismantling temporary access arrangements for certain applications, powered access equipment provide a mobile working platform that can be repositioned as the work progresses, which saves a lot of time and improves efficiency and productivity. This infact proves particularly valuable for jobs which involve multiple work locations.

There are many jobs which require workers to access several locations across a facility or a project at an elevated level. To deal with such a situation, if a temporary access arrangement is set, it involves repeated setup and movement, which is very time consuming, costly and leads to a lot of delays. Depending on the application, an AWP (like a boom lift or a scissor lift) can allow the working platform to be repositioned more efficiently.  For example, maintenance team in a data centre, working across a large area may need to access lighting, electrical systems or other elevated infrastructure at multiple points. Through the use of AWPs, access to these becomes easier and safer in a much faster way, compared to the use of conventional temporary access arrangements. Mobility therefore become an important productivity factor.

Working at a height requires appropriate planning, equipment selection, operator training and compliance with applicable safety requirements.  With worker safety at the centre stage, organizations are very rightly peculiar regarding this aspect associated with the work. AWPs provides them which such an option wherein safety at height is provided through a purpose-designed platform with operator controls and safety systems intended for elevated work.

Once at the elevated height, if workers spend excessive time arranging access to a work location, moving between work areas or waiting for temporary structures to be repositioned, the overall project can become less efficient. An AWP, which acts as a mobile platform, allows workers to reach multiple locations according to the requirements of the application. This platform makes their work not only easier and safer, but since movement between working areas become faster and there is no requirement of repositioning of the temporary structures, leading to less or no delays in the project.

This can be particularly useful for Electrical installations, Lighting maintenance, Painting, HVAC and MEP work, Facility maintenance, Signage installation, Industrial maintenance and many others.

But, not every elevated work area is directly accessible from below. Some locations may be positioned behind structures, machinery or other obstacles. In such situations, a boom lift or other suitable equipment may provide the outreach necessary to access the work location.

Places which are too much clogged or have narrow congested spaces AWPs like a vertical mast becomes a convenient option to get work done at elevated heights. This can make a significant difference in applications where direct vertical access is not practical.

Saying so Aerial access should not be treated as an afterthought. For construction and industrial projects, equipment requirements should ideally be identified during project planning. When it comes to maintenance, several factors determine, what sort of equipment is required which makes it easier to carry out maintenance activities

Before deciding on the appropriate equipment, decision makers / engineers / maintenance personals should analyze the following requirements:

Height | Reach | Capacity | Terrain | Space | Duration | Utilization

Once these factors are established, the appropriate equipment strategy becomes easier to develop, which makes the job safer, faster and efficient.

Even though there are many benefits, AWPs are still categorized as sophisticated equipment and these should only be operated by appropriately trained and authorised personnels.

Businesses should establish appropriate procedures related to:

  • Operator training
  • Daily/pre-use inspections
  • Site risk assessment
  • Emergency procedures
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Safe operating practices
  • Compliance with applicable standards and regulations

Without these in place, businesses should not move ahead to plan any work which has to be carried out at an elevated level. Hence equipment selection becomes a very important aspect before taking a decision to do any work at a height. Equipment Selection and safe operation, hence go hand in hand always.

The value of an AWP goes beyond its ability to lift a worker. The right equipment becomes an important productivity tool by providing efficient access to elevated work locations, reducing unnecessary setup and movement, and helping project teams execute work more systematically and safely. For businesses, the objective should not simply be to obtain access equipment. It should be to develop an access strategy that supports safety, productivity and project efficiency.
